What is a CSA and what makes ours different?

Becoming a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program member means being a “farming partner” –pledging in advance to cover the anticipated costs, thereby sharing the inherent risks of agriculture (poor weather, drought, disease, early frosts, pests, crop failure) and in return, reaping the rewards (bounty from a good season or bounty of specific crop) involved in farming, connecting with the land and knowing where your food is coming from.

Sprout’s Market Share CSA is unique in that it’s members will receive a variety of vegetables, herbs, eggs when available, and other goods which are produced by a diverse group of local farmers. Sprout plans for such contingencies and partners with farms that use growing techniques that try to protect the harvest such as growing a wide variety of crops that thrive in different conditions, cover cropping, crop rotation, irrigation, etc. Sprout strives for long-lasting and trusting relationships between farmers and communities.

What does our CSA program entail?

As a member of Sprout Food Hub’s Market Share CSA you will receive 16 weeks (mid-June through mid-October) of either a weekly/biweekly share consisting of six to ten items (vegetables, herbs and eggs when available) produced by a variety of local farmers. The shares will vary in weight and size depending on the season and what is available.

By participating in Sprout’s CSA, not only are you supporting multiple local farmers, you are supporting locally grown, sustainable fruits and vegetables, a more equitable food distribution system and are contributing to a more environmentally sound, economically fair and healthy society.
